Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup buttermilk or milk with vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon honey optional

Method

Prepare the Oven and Baking Sheet
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix Dry Ingredients
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
Combine Wet Ingredients
  1. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, molasses, and honey until smooth.
Form the Dough
  1. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
Shape and Bake
  1. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf. Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and Serve
  1. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
